Although training with Kettle Bells has been around for centuries, just recently it’s become popular in the U.S. - for many reasons.
What is a kettle bell?
A kettle bell is essentially a cannon ball with a handle.
Why is it better?
Training with kettle bells isn’t necessarily “better” than other modalities, just different. It does afford some advantages that are difficult to implement with other tools however:
It teaches decelleration:
Sound boring? Well the inability to decellerate weight and body movement leads to almost every injury, in the gym and out. Because of the momentum generated by the handle, the user can’t simply drop the bell like a dumb bell or barbell - the swing must be controlled, and slowed.
Improves Total Body Strength and Coordination:
Moving such a small, compact, but heavy weight requires the recuitment of pretty much every muscle in the body simultaneously. To do so requires and improves your total body strength and coordination (as opposed to the “one muscle at a time” approach seen in gyms). This is the main reason kettle bells are popular with athletes…
Hip extension:
Kettle Bells force your hips and glutes to fire - you simply will not be able to move the bells otherwise. The number one reason knees and backs get injured is because we, as a society, tend to initiate movement with our backs and knees. Kettle bells eliminate this bad habit. Of course, in addition to keeping our knees and backs healthy, if our hips and glutes start to function correctly, how do you think they’ll start to look? Speaking of which…
Rapid fat loss:
Using your entire body to maneuver a swinging cannon ball severely jacks up your metabolism, and therefore, burns fat FAST. Combine this with the glute benefits listed above and you’ll see why kettle bells are becoming very popular with the ladies!
